This term we have new articles on modernism with Item 2744 discussing T.S Eliot and his poem The Waste Land. Item 2745 examines the relationship between masochism and literature in the work of T.S Eliot and Virginia Woolf and Item 2746 discusses Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own in relation to gender roles in society.

English - Extension 2

Items 2747 and 2748 discuss the art of short story writing and provide an overview of the key components that make a successful short story.

Ancient History

Item 2749 provides insight into ancient Egyptian life in the areas of education, employment and gender roles in this society. Item 2750 discusses life in the ancient Egyptian village now known as Deir el-Medina, drawing on letters written by villagers. Item 2751 also discusses the discovery of written documents from Deir el-Medina which provide insight into life in the village.

Modern History

We have new articles on controversial German film maker Leni Riefenstahl. Item 2752 discusses the intense debate relating to Riefenstahl and her films Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Item 2753 discusses why these films have had such an impact and Item 2754 looks at the complex relationship between Riefenstahl and Adolf Hitler.

Community and Family Studies

Item 2755 examines the collision between work and unpaid care. Item 2756 explores the link between spirituality and community development and Item 2757 discusses a community development intervention strategy in relation to onshore refugees in Australia.

Earth and Environmental Science

Item 2758 discusses the rise in sea levels from 1870 and the impact this will have on mankind and the environment. Australia's water resources are examined with Item 2759 giving an overview of water management in Australia and Item 2760 discussing the use and future of desalination technology in Australia.

Engineering Studies

Item 2761 outlines a new test regime that allows technicians to create an exact replica of an aircraft on a computer, simulate a lightning strike and observe results thus aiding aircraft designers in designing safer aircraft.

Pd-Health-Pe

This term we look at methamphetamine addiction and its effects on individuals and families. Item 2762 discusses the effects of this drug by drawing on personal anecdotes and Item 2763 gives a personal account of one fathers experience with his methamphetamine addicted son. Item 2764 discusses the effects on children growing up with methamphetamine addicted parents.

The Great Brain Robbery: what everyone should know about teenagers and drugs by Tom Scott & Trevor Grice.

This book discusses drug use and adolescence. It gives information on different drugs and the effects they have on the brain. This information is presented in an engaging, accessible style and is interspersed with personal stories from individuals and families affected by drug use.

In My Life by Moya Sayer-Jones

Useful for those whose lives are affected by illicit drugs or anyone who is concerned about drugs and families. This book contains stories from people of all ages and backgrounds, written in their own words, discussing how drug use affected their family life.

Drugs in focus, Alcohol and other drugs: A guide for parents by Australian Drug Foundation.

A handy overview for parents with pictures of drugs commonly used by young people. Also includes a discussion about drug use in Australia, as well as tips on communicating with teenagers.

This updated edition will be available in libraries after November.

Drama

Australian playwright Dorothy Hewett is discussed this term with Item 2765 discussing The Chapel Perilous and its central character Sally Banner. Item 2766 gives a critical overview of the role of women in Dorothy Hewett's plays and Item 2767 offers a critique on some of Dorothy Hewett's best known plays including The Chapel Perilous

Chemistry

Item 2768 discusses the alternatives to the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) being used for refrigerants and blowing agents and Item 2769 examines the evidence relating to ozone depletion and recovery.

Legal Studies

Item 2770 discusses legal rights for lesbian co-mothers in relation to custody of children when a couple separates. Item 2771 looks at majority jury verdicts and Item 2772 discusses the role of juries in the criminal justice system. Item 2773 provides an overview of the findings of several reports written on the science and economics of climate change and Item 2774 discusses the violence against Aboriginal women and children and some possible ways forward with this issue. There is also a new Hot Topics this term; Item 2775 discusses employment and the law.

Impact: A changing land

Open: 10 November 2007 to 24 February 2008
Venue: Mitchell Galleries

This exhibition exposes the controversial history of both harm to and affection for the environment over the past 200 years. The story of human impact on the landscape of New South Wales is told through original sources selected from the Library's collections.

If welfare work is devoted to the needy, who should contribute to its provision, and who should receive the benefits? Michael Raper, Director of the Welfare Rights Centre, has spent many years upholding the rights of disadvantaged people. His talk is entitled 'Shifting the risk, doling the dollars and punishing the poor'. Organised by the Independent Scholars Association (NSW) in cooperation with the Library.
