Ancient History

This term new articles for Ancient History include Item 2845 which discusses the story of an Egyptian archaeological treasure virtually unknown to the general public. Item 2846 argues that the painted sarcophagus from Ayia Triada dates back to the earliest period of a Mycenaean presence on Crete and is associated with Mycenaean ideology and Item 2847 discusses the long standing assumption that motherhood was the primary social role of women of both the Late Bronze Age Aegean Minoan and Mycenaean societies.

Studies of Religion

In Studies of Religion articles include Item 2848 which examines Aztec deities and the impact they had on the lives of the people. Item 2849 examines the complex view of morality in relation to Buddhism and Item 2850 the author examines the complex ethics surrounding the abortion of the unhealthy or unwanted foetus in Islamic society.

Society and Culture

Item 2851 gives a personal account of a social researcher's field research in which the author reflects that social research is an ongoing, changing process that can be highly challenging, however ultimately worthwhile. Item 2852 discusses the nature of ethnographic research including its aims, objectives as well as advantages and disadvantages. Item 2853 draws on interviews with social researchers to examine the role of the research question in social research.

English

Item 2854 explores the question of whether tragedy can have moral value in the context of literature. The film Ten Canoes is also discussed this term with Item 2855 examining the two different time frames in which the story is filmed Item 2856 looks at the documentary style of the film that has led to confusion amongst audiences and Item 2857 explores the style and the structure of the film emphasising the integral and complex role of narrative and storytelling. Item 2858 examines the relationship between an individual and film or text by drawing on Jung's concept of the active imagination.

Geography/Agriculture

Items 2859 and 2860 tell the inspiring story of Cuba's transformation from a country highly dependant on oil to one that has adopted sustainable energy practices.

Food Technology/PDHPE

Nutrition is focused in this term with Item 2861 examining nutrition from the early 1900's to the present day and Item 2862 discusses a large national study that took place in 2006 that examined nutritional status including trends in obesity and overweight in primary and secondary school children.

Modern History

Articles this term are focused on the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. Item 2863 discusses the formation and rise of the Boxers as an anti-Christian movement and analyses the reasons behind the rebellion, Item 2864 details one man's account of the Boxer rebellion movement and Item 2865 examines the reasons behind the Boxer rebellion and outlines the historical significance and implications of the uprising.

Drama

Tony Kushner's play Angels in America is discussed this month. Item 2866 looks at the female characters and the representation of femininity in the play while item 2867 centres on the political aspects of the play, namely homosexuality and the AIDS epidemic of the 1980's.

Legal Studies

Articles this term for Legal Studies include Item 2868 which discusses the issues of using DNA evidence in a criminal trial, Item 2869 discusses the issue of paid maternity leave in Australia, Item 2870 discusses the legal issues surrounding genetically modified crops, Item 2871 examines the current abortion laws across the states and territories of Australia. Item 2872 discusses recent criminal law amendments made by the NSW Government in 2007, Item 2873 examines the issues surrounding child visitations to parents in prison, Item 2874 discusses the use of a recent development in DNA testing, the Low Copy Number technique in the Omagh bombing case and Item 2875 examines the use of 'green' claims by businesses to sell their products and the scrutiny of these claims by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Exhibitions at the State Library of NSW

STUDIO: Australian painters photographed by R. Ian Lloyd

STUDIO is a book, video and exhibition project that has been underway since 2002 and showcases a selection of Australia's most important artists working in their studio environment - the accompanying text reveals how each studio affects and inspires individual creativity.

The exhibition consists of 61 large colour photographic studies of the artists in their studios by National Geographic photographer R Ian Lloyd accompanied with text by John McDonald, art critic for The Sydney Morning Herald and former Head of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia.

Captivating personal stories of ordinary Australians are revealed in this exhibition of photo-interviews by Ruth Maddison, Hayley Hillis and Pippa Wischer. The synergy of words and pictures make compelling social documents which enable the viewer to understand the lives of others in a manner neither text nor photographs could explain alone.
