Modern History

In Modern History this term we look at the personality of Ian Paisley and the conflict in Northern Ireland. Item 2806 discusses Ian Paisley's early career and the impact he had in both politics and religion. Item 2807 is a commentary on Paisley's public role as a political and religious leader and as a man. Item 2808 examines the 1998 Good Friday Agreement concerning the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Item 2816 discusses the decline in Christian practice from the 1960's to the early 1990's and Item 2817 looks at religious identification between the years 1947 to 2001. Item 2818 is a study that looks at how parental influence has an impact on children's religious beliefs in adulthood.

Society and Culture

Item 2819 examines the concept of cultural diversity and argues that the values cultural diversity instils in people may sometimes negate the goal of an integrated multicultural society. Graffiti is also discussed this term with Item 2820 discussing the relationship between adolescents and graffiti and Item 2821 examining the reasons behind adolescent males' graffiti writing. Item 2822 discusses the hip hop movement as a subculture in Australia.

Ancient History

Included this term is an article on the wage system of Ptolemaic Egypt, Item 2823 discusses paid and unpaid labour, forms of payment, labour organisation and the money economy. We also have articles on the Roman Emperor Augustus with Item 2824 looking at the influence over the centuries of Augustus as an historical figure and Item 2842 discussing the death of Augustus.

Geography

Item 2825 examines urbanisation and the mega city phenomenon in Southeast Asia.

Business Studies

Morality and branding in business is discussed this term with Item 2826 examining corporate branding and the rise of anti-brand activism, suggesting ways in which businesses can combat the anti-brand movement. Item 2827 looks at the consequences for employees when companies incorporate moral values into their branding. Item 2843 discusses various loyalty schemes and the information they can provide to retailers and Item 2828 examines the use of customer data by financial services companies for marketing purposes.

Senior Science

Item 2829 discusses the AbioCor implantable heart which is the first self-contained artificial heart and has a hydraulically driven pump.

Community and Family Studies

The work and family balance is focused on this term with Item 2830 summarising a report by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission that investigates the balance between paid work and family responsibilities and Item 2831 discusses a 2004 case study that looks at women and the work/care balance.

Legal Studies

Item 2832 is a personal account of the Dr Haneef trial written by his barrister Stephen Keim, Item 2833 looks at the rule of law as it applies to international human rights, Item 2834 discusses the prevalence of intellectually disabled adults in jail and calls for a change in the criminal justice system regarding this issue. Item 2835 discusses social factors in the post release of prisoners and the correlation with recidivism, Item 2836 examines the developments in science over the past 50 years and the legal and ethical issues that surround them. Item 2836 examines the law in relation to medical end of life and Item 2837 discusses some technological challenges in relation to the internet and privacy. Item 2838 discusses the legal avenues available to indigenous women who are victims of discrimination, Item 2839 discusses the treatment of the indigenous population of Canada and Item 2840 reflects on the 1967 referendum that decided Australian Aboriginal constitutional rights.

Exhibitions at the State Library of NSW

Dockside: Sydney's working harbour, 1840-1875

Open: 5 May 2008 - 10 August 2008
Venue: Picture Gallery

This exhibition will celebrate Sydney's once central, but now declining, role as a commercial harbour. A selection of watercolours, oils and photographs will reveal the animated fabric of Sydney's waterside. Drawn from the Library's collections, works by renowned artists such as Conrad Martens and Frederick Garling will be displayed.

World Press Photo 08

Venue: Galleries, Mitchell Wing

This exhibition features the award-winning photographs from the 51st annual World Press Photo contest.

The international jury awarded prizes across ten theme categories to 59 photographers, including three Australians: Tim Clayton, Andrew Quilty and Daniel Berehulak. The prestigious World Press Photo of the Year was awarded to British photographer Tim Hetherington for a colour image of an exhausted US soldier resting in a bunker in Afghanistan.
