English
This term in English we analyse the poetry of Douglas Stewart in Items 2949, 2950 and 2951 in terms of his versatility,
quality and ideology. We also analyse the testimonies of Jewish Holocaust victims in Items 2952, 2953, while Item 2954
compares the validity of photographic images of the Holocaust, with the written documentation.
Ancient History
The recreational customs and social life of the ancient civilisation of Pompeii are described in Item 2955,
while Item 2956 looks at the epigraphical evidence that proves that Pompeii was not just a typical Roman town. It proves
that there are significant cultural influences from the wider Mediterranean region including Greece.
Modern History
There are two articles that look at the involvement of Britain and France in the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
Item 2957 covers policy in relation to disarmament of Germany in 1919, while Item 2958 gives an overview of historical
accounts of the Paris Peace Conference, through to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
Visual Arts
There are two articles on the subject of modern photography. Item 2959 focuses on the characterization of the subject
within the photographic portrait, while Item 2960 questions the definition of art and the suitability of some photographs
for public display.
Visual Arts / Aboriginal Studies
In Item 2960 the main subject is one photograph by Indigenous Australian artist Christian Thompson. The author
deliberates on the anthropological importance of indigenous Australian photographic art.
Studies in Religion
The studies of religion articles this term focus on Aboriginal religion. Items 2961 and 2962 elaborate on the
definition of The Dreaming with emphasis on the role of the Aboriginal ancestors. Item 2963 emphasises the different
ways in which Aboriginal religion is represented through their stories, paintings and song
Biology
All three of the biology articles are studies on the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace. Item 2965 looks
at the scientific experiments that demonstrated and proved the theory of natural selection, while Item 2966 emphasises the
contributions of Wallace in his approaches to the study of biogeography. Item 2967 outlines the modern discoveries that are
inspired by Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and evolution.
Legal studies
Item 2968 looks at streamlining trials, making them shorter and more intelligible to jury members. Item 2969 discusses
high crime rates in indigenous communities and the need for the criminal justice system to recognise the problems that are
unique to the indigenous community.
Item 2970 looks at online identity theft and how governments are responding to the problem. Item 2971 looks at misconduct
by jurors during trials, how this can be addressed and how confidence in the jury system can be restored. Item 2972 explores
how courts establish the factual basis on which sentences are determined. Item 2973 explores how the courts can be adapted
to take children's needs into account, with respect to their right to a fair trial. Item 2974 Examines the response of the
commonwealth and state authorities to abduction of children, and the process of obtaining orders for their return.
Item 2975 reports on Australia's human rights record over 2008 relating to the treatment of refugees and stolen generations,
as well as discussing anti-terrorism legislation and the judicial system. Item 2976 looks at the affects of rising sea levels
on Torres Strait Islanders' way of life, and the legal avenues they can pursue for compensation. Item 2977 looks at how people
create online identities through social networking internet sites and how issues such as defamation, privacy and copyright are
treated by the law.

The international jury awarded prizes across ten theme categories to 64 photographers, including Australian photographer
Mark Dadswell who was awarded 2nd prize in the 'Sports Action Singles' catergory for his image that captured the pain
and euphoria of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt's incredible new world record performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Beagle to Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Hobart and Albany. 2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and the 150th
anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.
